To protect your system from costly damage caused by freezing weather it is necessary to winterize systems before the first freezing event.
Here is a table detailing the first freeze dates for the Denver area. Please keep in mind, because of the altitude, the Castle Rock area may have a freezing event before Denver.

Some homeowners prefer to water during the month of October. To prevent freezing damage, I advise those customers to wrap the backflow with a blanket and cover it all with a plastic trash bag secured by duct tape. However, depending on the low temperatures, this practice may not prevent damage.
I recommend winterizing prior to the first freeing event and using a hose to water the lawn during October.
